Recycling is recently a part of my life, I know, shame on me! It is scary to see the amount of waste we actually produce every year. I bought some meat the other day and I ended up with at least 4 layers of wrapping paper. It takes up a remarkable amount of space too. Waste is a global issue and that is why I love when scientists comes up with creative solutions to address this! An article recently published in the “International Journal of Cosmetic Science” explains the results of ‘the biophysic evaluation of polysaccharide gel from Durian’s fruit hulls for skin”. Extra durian husk in Thailand is a real waste issue. Thailand has many wonders, and during my last time there, I discovered the durian fruit and the dragon fruit, both so ugly yet so sweet! Durian remains an important ingredient of the Thai diet, both fresh and dried. Like many big Asian cities, Bangkok has lots of street-food vendors that offer Thai delights; most of which will peel and serve fresh Durian fruit. The smell of durian is SO strong; if you have ever smelled it I am sure you haven’t forgotten! (I will spare you with the details, but let’s just say that there are some places where you are not allowed to actually eat it!)
I remember actually smelling it in the air of Bangkok, blocks away of where it was getting peeled. This high consumption rate of durians produces a very high volume of husk waste. And as it turns out these husks might also hold cosmetics potential!
A polysaccharide (sugar-based) gel was created from the durian husks, and applied on the faces of 80 volunteers for an 8 week period. Mainly, the durian gel showed some increase in water hold capacity of the skin and after 56 days skin also appeared slightly firmer. More studies will be conducted in the next couple of years on the matter, but if chemists managed to create a new efficient active ingredient from the durian, it could be great to see the amount of husk waste being used as an environmentally friendly cosmetic ingredient.
Call me romantic but I love when things have a happy ending, even for an ugly and smelly husk! What a beautiful end to finish in a cream to fight our cellulite, because, by the way durian husks also seem to have the ability to trap lipids! To follow…bisous. Solen
(recipe inspired by one of my favourite spot in Paris the ‘Rose Bakery’) this juice is delicious and super energizing, Apple is a great antioxidant, Parsley is full of vitamin and minerals, ginger is a stimulant, and lemon is also antioxidant and digestive. Tomorrow, I will add carrots to the mix to boost my carotene and have a gorgeous glow on my skin!
